In March 2025, SOS Berks hosted it’s 4th Recovery Simulation–a hands on event that demonstrates the challenges faced by people who are in early recovery from substance use disorder. About 50 people attended the event, which was held at Easy Does It, Inc in Bern Township.
A Recovery Simulation engages numerous participants and volunteers. Each participant receives a life card that represents a person in early recovery. They must then complete tasks on the life card within a 15-minute time frame by visiting tables manned by volunteers. Tasks may include seeking employment, visiting social services, paying rent, finding transportation, and meeting with a probation officer. Participants often must wait in long lines, and are sometimes faced with unforeseen circumstances like power outages or traffic jams that make it impossible to complete their tasks.
At the end of the simulation, participants joined in a discussion led by Dr. Ramona Roberts, Senior Executive Director of Caron Regional Outpatient Services. During that discussion, several participants said they found the experience eye-opening, and some expressed frustration at having to accomplish tasks with little time or money. Those who didn’t manage to pay their rents, were forced to carry a chair around with them for the next 15-minute segment, which slowed them down further.
This is the fourth simulation hosted by SOS Berks. Two others were held in 2023, and a third event took place at Penn State Berks campus. All events have been popular and well recieved.
