Managing Medication Safely During the Pandemic

January 6, 2021

With more family members staying home due to the pandemic, the safe management of all drugs, both prescription and over the counter, has become more important than ever. To help keep their loved ones safe, families must develop a plan for securely storing all medications, and properly disposing of those that are unused or expired.

About Medication Drop Boxes

Proper medication disposal prevents accidental and intentional misuse and helps protect the environment. The Berks County Medication Drop Box disposal program provides drop boxes at over 20 locations throughout the county where residents can safely dispose of prescription and over-the-counter medication. Please note that due to COVID-19 restrictions the accessibility of drop boxes may be more limited. CLICK HERE for drop box locations.

Free Medication Disposal Bags & Lock Boxes

The Council on Chemical Abuse is offering Berks County families FREE medication lock boxes and medication disposal bags.

Deterra® medication disposal bags are available free to residents who request them while supplies last. The bags, which are environmentally friendly, dissolve medications so that they can be disposed of safely in a household trashcan.

Also available free upon request are locking medicine cases. The cases allow for organization and secure storage of medicines and medical supplies. They feature a combination lock to help keep drugs and supplies secure. CLICK HERE to learn more or request a free lock box or disposal bag.
