The event will include speakers\, an invocation and a moment of silence recognizing those who have passed away in our community due to an overdose. Hold an event\, spread the message\, take action today. This year the theme for IOAD is 25 Years On. Still Needed. \nFor 25 years\, International Overdose Awareness Day has brought people together to remember those we’ve lost and to take action to save lives. The truth is\, we shouldn’t still need this day.  But we do.  \n Overdose continues to affect every community. Yet it can be prevented. We know how to reduce risk and keep people safe. By speaking openly\, learning from one another\, and treating each other with care and respect\, we build a world where fewer lives are lost.

SUMMARY:Black Balloon Day
DESCRIPTION:On March 6\, families and loved ones across the United States come together for Black Balloon Day to honor those lost to overdose. While overdose deaths have recently declined\, drug overdose remains the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S. Black Balloon Day is a time to remember\, raise awareness for harm prevention\, and support those impacted by substance use disorder. Sharing our stories and bringing the community together through shared experiences helps break the stigma and drive real change. (Overdose Lifeline). \nHow will SOS Berks Recognize Black Balloon Day?\nSOS Berks will raise awareness around Black Balloon Day through social media and other online sources. We encourage everyone to participate virtually by sharing their own stories\, a message of hope\, or simply posting about Black Balloon Day. Visit overdoselifeline.org to learn more about how you can participate. \n \nRead about the Berks County Black Balloon Bench\nThe story of the Black Balloon Bench appeared in the Winter 2019-2020 issue of The Response Magazine. Read it to learn how family members rescued a memorial bench from flood waters. The bench\, which had been decorated with balloons every Black Balloon Day\, was swept into the Schuylkill River during a storm. After days of tireless searching\, a family member found the bench and fought through strong currents to recover it. Today\, it stands as a symbol of resiliency and hope. Read the article.

SUMMARY:SOS Berks Dedication for The Journey Mural
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, April 18 at 3 PM  as we dedicate the second SOS Berks Mural\, The Journey\, located at 11th & Richmond Streets\, Reading PA. The dedication ceremony will take place at the Albright College Total Experience Learning Building at 1041 Rockland St. \nParticipants are asked to park at this location and walk one block along 11th Street to view the mural. \nThe dedication will then take place inside the Total Experience Learning Building where the murals are painted. During this event we will also celebrate Alcohol Awareness Month. The mural is based on the story of Yvonne Stroman\, who will talk about her Journey to Recovery from alcohol use disorder. \nLearn more about The Journey. \n\n \n \nLocated on a building owned by Albright College in an area that is highly visible to traffic\, this mural design was created by Reading artist Marian Njai. It is based on the recovery story of Yvonne Stroman\, who discussed with Marian the many joys of life in recovery\, which includes bicycling\, journaling\, helping others in recovery and mentoring young people. Yvonne’s inspirational quotes about her journey of recovery loop through the imagery\, which incorporates hand cut stencil patterns\, many of which resemble bicycle themed gears\, chains\, etc\, so that the theme of the journey is reflected in even the smallest elements. \n
